How it Feels to be Like God

An article that appeared in the Utica Phoenix was entitled: “Support Grows for Right of Gay People to Marry”. The second paragraph read that: “…53% of New Yorkers support marriage for same-sex couples while 38% do not.” What the author of this deceitful piece of news report does is to really craftily shift the origins and foundations of morality from a Divine Authority to the people themselves. In other words, she is having mortal humans play the game of being little gods. According to her, our source of moral values does not come from God or the natural law, but the opinion of the majority.

So now if 53% of New Yorkers decide that dogs should take a crap in public toilets at the shopping centers, this is something right and good because the majority said so. Dogs are now on the same level as human beings after the more numerical voted on it.  What if 51% of the people came to the conclusion that the Blacks are not an intelligent race and therefore should not go beyond kindergarten? According to our journalist, this is right because the majority expressed their opinion and this is to be a part of our social thinking. To go against their final decision would be discrimination.

What the author does not realize is that one cannot attempt to change certain moral structures without, at the same time, destroying their very nature. If Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to become a candidate for president of the USA and the government said he could not being that he was born in Austria, will we all yell, protest and shout that this is discrimination? No, we are all aware that the US Constitution does not permit foreign born persons to be elected to the highest office of the nation. We respect that and know that someone running for president from outside this nation would undermine our basic law of the land and its very foundations. Now why is it so difficult to apply the same line of reasoning and thinking to the moral question of the gays? Why is it so hard for us to accept and respect the basic moral structure of the institution of marriage, whose exclusive nature is destined only between two members of the opposite sex? Or is it really our hardened hearts that have made us forget that there is a greater and deeper Wisdom and Authority above us who rules the world, to whom, one day, we will have to render an account for our foolish sense of pride and arrogance?
