Noble in Action and Attitude
I finished reading, in these past few weeks, the Confessions of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and also some letters by St. Ambrose of Milan. Saint Patrick recounts how his area was pillaged by the barbarians and thousands of people were taken off into slavery. He attributes this to the great amount of sinfulness on the part of the local population. He himself also became a slave of a certain master. After a few years he was able to escape and went to seek a ship to leave the country. He had money to pay for the trip. The sailors, however, told him not to bother to pay.
They asked, however, that he subject himself to homoerotic activities with them. He left in horror, praying over and over again the “Our Father” as he was accustomed to doing. The sailors changed their minds and allowed him passage without any further molestation. At a certain point along the voyage, food ran out. The pagan sailors petitioned him to pray to his God and provide food. Near the shore, the sailors saw a herd of pigs passing by without anyone near them. They rejoiced and were able to kill the animals and satisfy their hunger. The faith and virtue of Saint Patrick had saved their lives. All Irish-American politicians in favor of homoerotic legislation are a shame to their ancestry and a disgrace to their patron saint who abhorred such practices. They are not true to their moral and ethnic values, but false hypocrites of a superficial green color.
Saint Ambrose of Milan was a powerful, holy, intelligent and respected bishop in the Roman Empire. Emperors obeyed him whenever he spoke or requested something. He had intimacy with and access to the great men of his times. He wrote a letter asking the Emperor not to construct a huge pagan temple that the idolaters had solicited financial help for. The project was not approved. He wrote another letter asking the Emperor not to build the synagogue the Jews asked for. It was not built. He had another Emperor do penance for his sins at the steps of the basilica for murdering innocent people. The Emperor did the penance. Nowadays our American bishops implore the Catholic politicians not to support or vote in favor of abortion. The politicians laugh in their faces. Modern bishops do not have the greatness, strong character or personality of a St. Ambrose. St. Ambrose also called to attention the clergy that refrains from denouncing evil in public: “…If the priest speak not to him that erred, he who errs shall die in his sin, and the priest shall be liable to the penalty because he warned not the erring..” (letter 51 St. Ambrose)
