St. Anthony Mary Claret is the patron saint of the Catholic Press. The reason being is that he published millions of copies of cheap books of ancient and modern Catholic authors and had them given away for free! He started a religious library in Barcelona from where he distributed the books he would print. He was greatly devoted to the Eucharist and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and spread this love to everyone he met.
I was reading about the history of the American newspapers in the 19th century. They wielded a real power in this country. They determined the election of two presidents. Andrew Jackson was never supposed to have been elected. No one really knew him, and besides, he had a criminal record (for invading Florida and attacking needlessly the Seminole Indians). The newspapers of that period, however, put a blanket over his actions, since there was a political interest in forcing Spain to sell the State. The newspapers glorified Jackson's military campaigns and had him elected president. Grateful for this collaboration, Jackson, on his part, put many newspapermen and journalists in high government positions and granted them concessions and exemptions. It is too bad how the powerful press has become a sort of parallel government in this country. The Supreme Court or the Legislature should curb their power and have them be responsible in their liberty. Their freedom should be limited and controlled.
St. John Neumann is the only saint I know of that wrote articles to the paper (and there were hundreds of saints in the 19th century). St. Francis de Sales is the only saint I know of that made and spread pamphlets among the Calvinists. That is why he is the patron of journalists. Why don't others all do the same thing?
