Vatican Error
A few years ago, the Vatican issued a list of what it considered to be the 100 best films ever of cinema history. In the list was included Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List”. Such a choice only verifies that the Vatican has a very superficial knowledge as to what a true cinematographical art work has in its elements and composition. The Vatican chose “Schindler’s List” because it relates the story of a German called “Schindler” who did everything possible to save the Jews from the extermination camps. Fine and good; but the Vatican also ignored and overlooked the fact that this film has provocative and sexually obscene scenes.
It is no use to try to combat an injustice at one angle and commit another one at an opposite side. This would bring serious doubts to the sincerity of belief in your cause. Steven Spielberg, in his film, shows his indignation at the way the Jews were treated and exalts the heroism of Schindler, yet, with his obscenities he shows his contempt for the dignity of women, authentic respect for one’s body and human love. In the question of human justice, it is all or nothing. If a husband practices charity with his neighbors, but beats up his wife and children, his works are hypocritical and useless. He is insincere and dishonest. If Spielberg and the Vatican truly believe in human dignity and justice, they would denounce impurity and the exploitation of the human body with as much vigor and conviction as they do the inhuman treatment of the Jews. If one can simply tolerate and even promote the humiliation of a woman’s body, I cannot, in all sincerity, believe that Spielberg and the Vatican really also cared that much for the victim Jews in this film. The moral indecencies of the film spoiled it (like mold on a strawberry) and therefore disqualified it as one of the best films of movie history.
